Zee awards

Mauritius hosted the Zee awards yesterday. That’s the equivalent of Bollywood’s Oscars, Bollywood being the Indian name of its movie industry. I think it comes from shortening Bombay’s Hollywood, but I may be wrong. It was the usual posse of stars and their admirers coming to the island, and doing their best to be happy to be here and hopefully getting an award.

What they didn’t expect was certainly the cyclone ‘Diwa’ which simply must have sent the Indian actors and movie producers wishing they were somewhere else. Torrential downpours, strong winds, …. not an ideal way of hosting that kind of ceremony. Haha! :D

Some people (including me) keep saying that the cyclone warnings issued did not reflect the true force of the cyclone, irrespective of what the weather centre said. Having seen lots of cyclones in my time, I do believe that the cyclone warnings were understated so as not to frighten the Indians.

Anyway, the winners are Amitabh Bachchan (best actor), Rani Mukherji (best actress) and Black (best film). The ceremony was held in the afternoon here, so that it coincided with prime time in India, and later that evening the national tv station broadcasted the ceremony. Nice, with the people all dressed up, lots of Indian songs and dance, and the presentators speaking both English and Hindi.

Yeah, too many ads… But I think it’s the Indian broadcasting company that decided the way it should be. Anyway, I didn’t watch the whole thing. Too long.
