Some newspaper news
Some crazy titbits I read in the newspaper during the flight from HK and SH:
The taxi rate in BJ has gone up from 1.2 or 1.6 to 2.0 since the beginning of June. And since more people now want to take the black taxis (ie illegal ones), the authorities are making a crackdown with a fine of up to RMB25,000 to the driver. The aim is supposed to force the public to stop using the cheaper black cabs. If these guys could afford to pay such hefty fine they would have been able to get the money to buy a real taxi. Duh! And what about the tricycles (motorised or man powered), the motorcycles, etc that also act as illegal cabs in the city?
One of the DragonAir flight was delayed earlier this month. DragonAir is refuting that it was the company implied in the article, stating that their SH-BJ flights are taken over by Air China. Apparently, a security agent got on board an airplane with a gun. When the cabin attendants refused to let him carry the weapon, he claimed he had a permit for the gun, and as a security agent, he was entitled to carry it with him. The cabin crew and flight captain refused to have him as passenger for the flight, and the whole thing remained at a stalemate after more than two hours. Finally, the agent left the plane to take another flight for Beijing, and the initial plane could take off. How did such a thing happen and what happened to the security agent?
An engineer was caught sleeping on a sofa in his locked office by his manager. The event took place in Fuzhou, and the engineer was sacked on the same day. Surprisingly, the Intermediate court of GZ found in favour of the engineer and ordered the company to give him a compensation of RMB20,000. The Court stated that although the engineer did break the company rules by sleeping during work hours, it had suffered no losses from his action. I think if this kind of judgement is held by the court, the work situation there is likely to be chaotic for some time. What kind of crazy logic is that?
