Open own business?
As the wait for a job etches on… I am thinking about the possibility of opening my own business in China. But the big question is WHAT? A couple of friends have suggested opening a restaurant.
I guess it’s feasible, but I need to know where and what kind. Chinese restaurant is easier, as Western cooking would imply getting a foreign cook, which also imply larger restaurant. I mean, if you looks at some of the restaurants near Shufe, or any other universities, it’s more like a small stall with some seats and a couple of tables. Fixed assets are very low. But I don’t think the government is going to grant me a working visa(?) for such small investment.
Furthermore, finding a decent location is hard. I could move to different cities/provinces, but I wouldn’t be familiar with the popular spots. Going to cities where the cost of living mean less cost, but also less revenue. Need to consider the habits of the locals too.
Anyway, I still have a little time to think it out more. Maybe also ask more people about what I could do.

Well, I was actually thinking of spending some time at a friend’s friend’s bar to learn a bit, plus go to see a Chinese friend in another Province who owns a restaurant. But as I said, they’re unlikely to be in the same place as where I would open the restaurant.

It appears that there are a lot of dogs. You could open a “dog” restaurant there.
Seriously, if you want to go in the restaurant business, you can start working for a restaurant for a couple of months. First, you will learn the business, get to know the wholesalers, the pricing markup, the local authorities… It is a bold move to open a restaurant in a new country without any prior experience.
Good Luck!
