Sex and Shanghai

It’s been a hotly debated subject on many Chinese forums/blogs these last few days. Sex and Shanghai is a blog by a supposedly mid-30s English teacher in Shanghai narrating his conquests. The blog is unfortunately no longer accessible to the public, so I am not going to post the link to his blog.

Why is it in the news? After all, he is not the first (nor the last) Caucasian to be having a good time in Shanghai (or other cities in China). Well, the guy’s writing was quite graphic, and he looked down upon the local men. This caused many locals to be unhappy, among which a certian Zhang Jiehai (张结海). According to Travellers’ Tale, Zhang’s a psychology professor with a startling lack of self-insight, he is even trying to organize an internet lynching. In frighteningly xenophobic terms, he exhorts his countrymen to hunt down this “hooligan foreigner? who is satisfying their women and thus threatening to expose their sexual inadequacy. Given that married Chinese men are collecting whole villages of concubines, the ludicrous charge that public morality is threatened by a single promiscuous Englishman suggests Prof. Zhang has some unresolved, er, issues.

For an English translation of Zhang’s call for hunting down the ‘hooligan foreigner’ click here

Below’s some extracts from another blog where the ‘bad foreigner’ replied to the professor

Quote:
This man is a professor at the Chinese Academy of Sciences. A professor! In this is shown so much that is wrong about today’s China. A country’s educational system should be home the best and brightest, to those who can think, weigh, balance, judge. And instead what does poor China get? Knee-jerk nationalists like this, myopic, thoughtless, a crass dolt who thinks like a sheep, rages like a hyena, and is impotent like a mule. Ah, Zhang, proud Zhang, dressed in a little brief authority, like an angry ape.

And – astonishment piles on astonishment – he is a professor of psychology! A man who should have some insight into the shades and ways of thought, the grades and colors of morality, comes out instead with such an article! Every word of it in a nail in the coffin of his credibility.

Yet this is what passes for the educated in China. This is the caliber of person China has in its most prestigious institutes. What hope can there be for China when people like this educate its young? How can the country ever take its rightful place among the leaders of the world when this is the standard of its thinkers?

I hold my head in my hands as I read his article. I had hoped China was moving beyond such folly; but as I read and re-read what he writes I see how strong the path to failure is, how compelling. If China cannot get past its Zhang Jiehais, what hope?

(End of quote)

i’ll say that it’s a perfect deconstruction of zhang way of seeing things. And believe me if an article like this was written on mauritius. This would have been a great slash for the mauritian manhood.

Thanks lai

Do read my blog Mauritius China where you will find a paper from Prof. Li giving some lights on the cultural changes happening in China. Note that the paper was written for a 2004 conference. Modern China with old, Eastern & new Western behaviors.

Americans finally realize the try-before-you-buy works just as well with sex as it does with commodities. Rather than marrying and then shacking up with hot sex coming after the nuptuals, Americans are increasingly putting out before putting on the wedding rings.Women are just as likely as men to get it on before matrimony.
I think this is just the sign of the times. I mean, we like to test things, try them out, before making a purchase. Why should sex and marriage be any different? The stigma associated with pre-marital sex is dead. Long live free love!
