Fragrant Hill
I went to Fragrant Hill on Wednesday with a friend - she’s been in Beijing for some 5-7 years but had never climbed the mountain during autumn. It was a nice day - clear sky, relatively warm temperature (around 11C). However, I couldn’t find sleep until way after 5am, which meant I only had less than 3hours sleep that night.
Getting there from Wudaokou took about 1hr by bus (RMB1.5 one way per person), and the entrance is RMB10 each. Now, I have not done any fitness exercise for years… So lazy. So I knew it was going to need a major effort on my part to get to the top. The top, Xianglu Peak, is some 1,827m high. After walking up for about an hour, I was really tired and sweating profusely. I decided to remove my hooded overall to allow the sweat to evaporate and get some fresh air to cool me down. Big mistake!
The cold air up there slowly caught up with me, and I was feeling cold by the time I put back the overall. In fact, it was too late. The lack of sleep, cold air and poor physical health / ‘low’ oxygen all contributed in being SICK! I was over 3/4 of the way when I just had to stop and puke my late breakfast over the side of the mountain. Shame. At least I only had soup (粥) that morning, meaning it was clear watery thing that didn’t leave any trace.
Man, was I hurting to get up that last bit… In fact, my friend had to slightly pull me up the last 15m or so. She was only gently pulling my hand, like when you try to steer kids onto a path. I felt very bad. I am the guy, but I was the one who couldn’t finish it without help
It’s true that my friend goes to the gym almost every night, so her physical condition is pretty good, but it really hit home that I should start doing some stuffs to keep me fit. And less drinking / smoking (which is occasional actually).
Anyway, I put some of the new pictures on the Fragrant Hill page.
