Limited internet

Since the earthquakes that happened earlier in Taiwan, the internet in mainland China has suffered largely.

I was online chatting with someone in Fujian province when the earthquake happened. My friend suddenly went “Earthquake! Earthquake!” and fled away from the computer. I was rather surprised and left a message asking if she was ok. Some 10mins later she came back and asked if I felt the earthquake in Beijing (no, I didn’t). She then told me that the earthquake originated around Taiwan, and she was hoping that her friends there were all ok.

I thought that was it, another earthquake that doesn’t affect my peaceful life here… But later that night, I suddenly lost connection on my msn, and the overseas websites that I was surfing all stopped responding… I went to bed and the next morning tried to surf as usual, but found that msn, yahoo and all the overseas sites were down, except for google search (my homepage). I was rather annoyed as I thought the server was cutting off overseas sites - something a foreigner in BJ said happens to him, although he doesn’t allow technicians to test and diagnose the problem from his appartment.

After checking with friends via QQ (a Chinese ICQ type program), I found that the problem was the same in Shanghai, Shenzhen, Chengdu, Fujian, etc… This calmed me down. They also told me that the cause of the internet problem was due to the earthquake.

Since late Wednesday night, I can log onto msn and surf onto English websites, but Yahoo and American websites are still down. Just now, I seem to be able to access American sites (and this one) intermittently. So I am using this opportunity to update a few things. I understand that the situation will be back to normal in about 3 weeks. That’s a long time if I can’t read my mail….

Just shows how we have become dependent on technology and absence of it gets us annoyed if not frustrated. I cannot imagine a world without internet net or electronic instant connection. Happy New year. Cheers from India

Oh, I have long been addicted to internet. I remember last year when I went to Sichuan on a school trip, I had to go to the internet bar or the hotel’s net area and surf for an hour or two. I would feel there’s something important missing if I can’t get online.

That’s very true. In the ‘old’ days, you would be rather rejoiced if you had a pc at home. You would enjoy the games every minute, and be addicted to championship manager, and other strategic games. But now even the games are here, you miss out something!!! Guess that’s called addiction age!!! Welcome to the 22nd century!!
