There's a small night market just outside my housing estate (xiaoqu) and I often go and have some pancakes, fried noodles (mines, vermicelles, hefun, etc), dumplings, hotpot-styled boiled food and other snacks late at night. In fact I just had some dumplings now at half past midnight. It's quite rare for me to get an upset stomach from the food. I'll try to make a post about the night market outside my neighbourhood another time. I'm a bit scared to take pictures of the food and goods sold, in case the sellers start shouting at me or worse.

LOL! The waste water smell was probably the stinky tofu. It's difficult to stand the smell at the beginning. I can only withstand the smell for short periods. Although many restaurants also have very poor toilet facilities which could also result in the smell. Guangzhou has a larger variety of street food than Beijing/Shanghai. I've not tried live octopus. At least I can't remember. And I did eat some nasty stuff before.

When I was living in China, my favourite street foods were kebab, savoury pancakes (not the ones that you mentioned here) and caramelised mixed nuts (like those Turkish nutty sweets) prepared by the Xinjiang people. Luckily I've never felt sick eating those :P Well that was over a decade ago. It never crossed my mind that the ingredients could be fake (although fake eggs were already making news back then).

Hello!

I just came back from a trip in China. Well, I do not know why, but sometimes I could not stand the smell near street food stalls or even some roadside restaurants. It smelled like waste water :S
But I did eat a few things out there despite not having the opportunity to try things that I wanted to. Like eating alive octopus etc :P

Today there was a bit of news about glowing meat. It's caused by bacteria for info, and is not suitable for consumption. Never cease to be amazed at what happens here.

Once saw a cctv report on an accident. A car turning left is struck by a motorbike coming at full speed behind it and crashed on the left side. Does taking the wheel means one is all powerful that one think s/he can do anything? Think there is some education which needs to be done in this respect. There is also air pollution which causes poor visibility. But that does not preclude taking precautions.
