40th year of independence … doing nothing

We’re days away from the celebration of the 40th year of independence and I’m not at all excited. Is it because I’m far away from Mauritius? No, I don’t think so. I’m feeling more and more like it’s no big deal and I don’t belong there.

Don’t get me wrong. Although I am not celebrating, it doesn’t mean I think the independence thing is crap or that we would have been better being a British colony. It’s just that the annual show we have back home for independence day is so bad and boring. And oftentimes politicized.

Here in China, the Mauritian embassy is inviting the Mauritians to a reception in Beijing that evening. Nothing much, but then it’s always been like that. At least they’re holding a little something. Under the previous Embassador, we sometimes didn’t have any celebration, and the explanation I obtained from unofficial sources was that the government at the time didn’t allocate any fund to that respect, and that our dear Embassador was losing face towards other Embassadors on that account.

Well, I’m glad to have received an invitation to the reception, but I will have to decline, as it’s on a workday, and (more importantly) I am in Shanghai, and not Beijing.

Digital TV only for Mauritius

I just read an old article on the website Servihoo where the local national broadcasting station, the MBC, is pushing for the switch to digital TV.

I might be wrong, but the way I understood the article, analogue TV channels are going to be stopped, and the local populace will be forced to fork out to buy a decoder box. Maybe as from next year. :wtf: (Note: digital channels already being offered by MBC for a certain fee)

I support the move to offer digital channels to the Mauritians, and to make them pay for that. After all, those who want better variety of programmes and entertainment are already subscribing to satellite channels, and they have no problem in finding that extra money.

But I am totally against the MBC’s plan to force people to subscribe to their digital channels. We are already imposed a monthly (quarterly? annual?) fee to have to watch real crappy programs (90+% of the contents sucks, no decent local production, the foreign movies are of yesteryears). Now we will have to pay for a decoder box? I don’t care if they say it’s a one-off charge, these things will need to be updated/upgraded constantly, and they can break down. No need to say that we will probably end up disclosing some info about ourselves on registering. They are an additional charge to the low-income families.

If there is no more analogical (sp?) channels, am I allowed NOT to pay the monthly TV fee if I only watch channels from other satellite providers? After all, I won’t be able to WATCH OR RECEIVE MBC if I don’t have the decoder box. Right? So would I still be charged for a service I can’t receive?

Will the people in Mauritius really care about what I just wrote? Probably not. Nowadays we have become really apathetic and just put our hand into our pocket to pay while grumbling about poor or useless services. We are currently paying a TV fee irrespective of whether we do watch the MBC on the charge that our TV sets can receive the broadcasted channels. We will just accept the changes, think the MBC is more crap than ever (because we will hopefully see the programmes more clearly), then get on with our lives. After all, that article is over 6 months old, and nobody said anything meanwhile.

Servihoo article: Here

Wii or Xbox?

That’s my main question right now. Forget the income tax seminar (that I didn’t attend because I got sick), never mind the list of duties that the Chinese accountant just gave me (it looks like I will have to setup and take care of the whole thing). All in my mind is the question: Wii or Xbox? Which one to buy?

Wii - more ads, looks more ‘fun’ with its stupid games, more ‘in’?
Xbox - better game resolution.
Both have Guitar Hero 3.

Misc. pictures

Some miscellaneous pictures I had in my handphone. Not very nice, but was bored.

Snow in the train depot
The glaring yellowish thing on the floor IS snow. Picture taken of the train depot opposite my house.

Misty Jinjiang Park Wheel
Jinjiang Park in the mist
Misty pictures of the Ferris Wheel in Jinjiang Amusement Park. That’s how most days are in Shanghai currently. Try to find the wheel in the daylight picture. Haha.

Suntory Cafe Latte
The Caffe Latte I like to drink. Except I drink from the bottle model instead of can.

Keyboard … wall
That’s my keyboard. Well, no. Actually that’s the wall of a block of houses. Cool, eh? I will try to take a better picture another time. It’s near Xujiahui, about 10-15mins walk maybe from the station.

Snowing now

It’s been very cold in Shanghai lately, and today it snowed a little in the morning, and it is snowing right now. I would have taken a distant shot of the building where trains stop if I had my camera with me, but I left it in Mauritius. There’s a little layer of snow that has not melted there. Outside, it’s already turned into icy water.

I went to Ikea today and bought a little over RMB300 of small stuffs. Spent over 1.5hrs although I knew exactly what I wanted to buy. (Sidenote: Aline, yes the place is big). Ok, where I wanted to buy only a couple of things, I ended buying a dozen. Haha! It’s life. I had already done a first trip the other week.

My visa procedures are practically over. I should get the passport with the residence permit in it during the week. It’s taken me some 3 weeks to get it all over.

Update

Is that the London Millenium Wheel? … Actually that’s a Shanghai park wheel
Picture taken from 9tour.cn

It’s been a long time since I posted anything. Been busy/lazy/whatever ….

I am now in Shanghai, feeling darn cold. I will spare the rants about Air Mauritius’s lack of Chinese music and movie channels not properly identifiable. There is no HK destination on the list of flights.

I moved into a small apartment, which is not bad, although the toilet/bathroom could be better, and the kitchen’s got no window, meaning that the apartment would for hours smell of whatever I cook. Will decide whether or not to get satellite channels later. There is already a satellite dish affixed, courtesy of former resident.

I got internet back on, although I have to leave the darn modem on all the time. If I shut it off, the laptop has problems connecting to it for the first 5-10mins. I tried changing the network name and password of my wifi modem, but there was apparently a problem, and the password is no longer recognised. I tried resetting it, but that doesn’t seem to be working. WTF? No wifi for the moment, need to connect my laptop to the cable directly.

My HP laptop’s fingerprint scan recognition feature’s gone bonkers. Can no longer use it to log in or redo new fingerprint scans. The laptop’s only a few months old.

I still haven’t bought all my stuff. Too lazy to go out in the cold knowing I would have to fight to get a cab back home afterwards, while carrying awkward bulky stuffs.

Went to a bath/sauna/massage place last Friday. My friend, who is a flight attendant, had dropped by in Shanghai and we decided to go there as soon as she reached her hotel in Hongqiao. It was then around midnight, and after picking her up, we went to the place. Left there after 3am, went to sleep around 4am, then got up at 7am to get ready for work. Felt so sleepy on Saturday (I work full day on Saturdays). I dozed off several times in the afternoon. Good thing not much to do that day.

I now enjoy having a daily drink of Caffe Latte by Suntory. Best drunk cold. Doesn’t do much to your sleepiness.

Oh yeah, I did a physical test as part of the visa procedures, and among other things the diagnosis was:
Suffer from high blood pressure (well, that’s not surprising)
Fatty infiltration of liver (whatever that means)
Abnormal liver function (WTF? I am not a heavy drinker, what abnormal FUNCTION?)
Hyperlipidemia (i.e. likely to suffer from bad cholesterol)
Abnormal electrocardiogram (Didn’t precise what abnormality)
Abnormal cardiovascular system (WTF? Why no details?)

Just reading it makes me wonder if my time’s almost up in this life. Haha.

Looking for a gym in my neighbourhood. Part of my new year resolution of having a better lifestyle and be more fit. Didn’t find any interesting gym on the net. I should walk/bike around looking for those not on the web, but too lazy for that. Best option is to go to Xujiahui’s Physical (on 5th floor of Metro City, just above Xujiahui metro station). However, it is not that big and if I go there after work, the place would be packed and difficult to find free machines. I am considering going there early morning. Get up at 6am, arrive there at 7am when it opens, do an hour of exercise, take another shower, then get to the office by 9am. Feasible in THEORY, except that I know I’m so lazy.

Work has been slow because Mauritius office is closed till January 8th, so I can’t get the information I need to work.

I still have to open a bank account. My passport is currently at some governmental office where the work certificate thing is being processed. Should get it back tomorrow. Then, if there has been no problem, it will be a trip to the PSB to get my residence certificate, and I will be hassle free for about a year (I think).

My first spiked drink

null

Went to Ngyone as usual last Saturday (the 10th). I had a small bottle of beer and chatted with friends. After sipping about half of it I felt kind of drunk and hot. I had to wash my face, but still felt drowsy. I spent some time dozing on one of the sofas. Later I went to the bar and stood by some friends.

I suddenly ’slept’ and collapsed on the ground. My friends thought I was joking, then realised something had happened to me. They took me to another sofa to recover. I have no recollection of sleeping, just that at one time I felt people talking to me in my ’sleep’ and dragging me up to my feet before taking me to a sofa. My friends said that they thought I was joking at first when I fell down in an unnatural way. It was as if all my muscles stopped working and I just crashed down.

Now, I am not a heavy drinker, but I am not one who will be drunk after ONE bottle of beer. The only plausible explanation is that my drink was spiked.

Whether it was aimed at me or someone else (there was a girl standing not far from me at the bar, so maybe she was the intended victim), nobody knows. But one thing is for sure. We have to be careful about our drinks when outside.

I wonder if these drugs are easily available and how much they cost. I never got people trying to sell these to me. Unlucky me.

Beijing Traffic Lesson: Left Turn

This is not from me, but it’s too damn funny not to post it. It’s definitely something that you might see in Beijing.

As I may have mentioned before, traffic in Beijing is its own art form. The city is adding thousands of cars per - I don’t even know, week? Which means you have a healthy mix of people who have never driven before interspersed with people who should never have been driving in the first place.

To introduce you to the intricacies of Beijing driving, I will start with a relatively simple concept: the left turn.

STEP 1:

Step 1
We see here a typical intersection. The light has just turned green for the east-west streets, and car [A], an enormous black Lexus with pitch black windows, wants to make a left turn into the southbound lanes. Pedestrians wait on each corner. (For purposes of this demonstration, we’ll assume no one is running the north-south red light, and no one is jaywalking - a rather large assumption.)

STEP 2:

Step 2
To make a left turn, it is VITAL that [A] cut off all eastbound traffic as soon as possible. The first few brave or foolish legitimate pedestrians step off the curb; this is of no concern. [A] makes his move.

STEP 3:

Step 3
NO! Too slow! [A] has managed to partially block [B], a brand new purple and yellow Hyundai taxi, but [A] has only achieved what Beijing drivers would consider a ‘weak’ blocking position.

STEP 4:

Step 4
In this detail, we can see why: [A] has only inserted his left bumper and cannot move forward without contact. [B], on the other hand, is in the dominant position - by putting his wheel hard to the right and flooring it, he can fully block [A].

STEP 5:

Step 5
[B] proceeds to swerve right, cutting off [C], a tiny red Peugeot with a gold plastic dragon hood ornament, spoiler and assorted knobs glued on. Since [B] is just accelerating, and [C] is now decelerating, this has created a low-density ‘dead space’ in the intersection. [D], a strange blue tricycle dumptruck carrying what appear to be 40 of the world’s oldest propane tanks, sees this and makes a move.

STEP 6:

Step 6
DENIED! [E], an old red taxi with its name sloppily stenciled in white on its doors, has boldly cut across two lanes of traffic, behind [D], and then swerved right, driving [D] into an extremely weak position behind [A]. Meanwhile, [B] and [C] are still fighting for position, with [C] muscling his way into the crosswalk. The only thing between [E] and a successful left turn is a few lawful pedestrians. [E] steps on the gas…

STEP 7:

Step 7
…and is cut off by [F], an elderly man pedaling his tricycle verrrryyy slooooowwwly with a 15-foot-diameter sphere of empty plastic cooking oil bottles bungee-corded haphazardly to the cargo area. He was part of the lawful pedestrians, but seeing the stalled traffic, decided to cut diagonally across the intersection. Not only has [F] blocked [E], he is headed straight at [B], giving [C] the edge he needs.

STEP 8:

Step 8
[B] concedes to [C], who drives in the crosswalk behind [F] and blocks [E]. Meanwhile, [G], a herd of about 20 bicycles, mopeds, pedestrians and wheelbarrows, sensing weakness in the eastbound lane and seeing that much of the westbound traffic is blocked behind [D], breaks north against the light. [F] pedals doggedly onward at about 2 miles per hour, his face like chiseled marble.

STEP 9:

Step 9
Now things get interesting. [C] has broken free and, as the first vehicle to get where he was going, wins. [E] makes a move to block [B] but, like [A] at the start of the left turn, only gains a ‘weak’ block. [A] has cleverly let [F] pass and guns into a crowd of [G], which both moves [A] forward and drives some [G] stragglers into the path of [D], clearing [A]’s flanks. Little now stands between [A] and a strong second-place finish.

STEP 10:

Step 10
Except for public bus [H], one of those double buses with the accordion-thing connector. [H] has been screaming unnoticed along the eastbound sidewalk and now careens dangerously into a U-turn. This doesn’t appear to concern the 112 people packed inside and pressed against the windows (although that could be due to a lack of oxygen.) [H] completely blocks both [A] and [D]. On the other side of the intersection, [B] has swerved into the lawful pedestrians (who aren’t important enough to warrant a letter) and has gained position on [E].

[E] has forgotten the face of his father: He was so focused on his battle with [B] that he lost sight of the ultimate goal and is now hopelessly out of position.

This clears the path for dark horse [I], a blue Buick Lacrosse, to cut all the way across behind [H] and become the second vehicle to get where he was going (and the first to complete a left turn), since [F] has changed his mind again and is now gradually drifting north into the southbound lanes. But everyone better hurry, because the light is about to change…

STEP 11:

Step 11

STEP 12:

Step 12
And we’re ready to start over.

And here’s a picture of how it is at a roundabout:

Hit and run against my car

The damaged part
:swear:
This evening some stupid son of a b…h bumped his car onto mine and drove on without any regards to the damages inflicted to my car. I am so F..KING pissed right now. >:) :wtf:

I went to Flic en Flac to have dinner with a good friend of mine. He wanted to meet me to discuss something. After dinner and chatting with some other friends, I went back to get my car at the parking outside. It was already pitch black and the security guard nowhere to be found. I drove the car back home and after parking it safely in the garage, I went to close the garage doors. To my utter surprise, I found a big smear/mark on my left front bumper and the left blinker’s glass broken. The blinker still works. Fortunately.

I feel like using a baseball bat and hit that a..hole’s head into a heap of mush. :whip:

OK, if the driver was a woman, please change the words to whore and c*nt. :really:

Yay for WordPress 2.3.1

I have been struggling with the recent versions of WordPress for several months. I kept having my draft posts disappear on save / save and continue. And even when it is saved, a view post would result in a blank page.

Fortunately, with the latest 2.3.1 version, things are back to normal. Well, normal as much as possible. I still need to modify a file or two to get the emoticons visible when creating a new post, but otherwise all is working fine now.

A picture without any relation to the post. But I’m bored.
